Drivers warned to make simple car check before November

Motorists are being warned to make a simple check on their cars ahead of the clocks going back.

The clocks go back one day before Halloween this year, on Sunday, October 30 2022. When the clocks go back, the UK is on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

The clocks are moved back so we can make use of the best natural light as the earth orbit the sun. The countries that are further from the equator get more hours of darkness from the clock changing.

The change means people will be driving in the dark more frequently, at a time when there will be added weather conditions that can also reduce visibility. Car dealer group Peter Vardy is urging all drivers to check their car lights are in full working order before the clocks go back.

The Highway Code states drivers must "ensure all sidelights and rear registration plate lights are lit between sunset and sunrise, use headlights at night, except on a road which has lit street lighting, and use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced".

Misusing or having faulty car lights could result in a £1,000 fine and three penalty points for failure to have proper control of the vehicle or full view of the road and traffic ahead.

The easiest way to check that your car lights are working is to turn your car engine on and leave the handbrake on, then one by one test each light and walk around the car to check they are working. Peter Vardy recommends asking a friend to help you with this so you can remain in the car as they walk around the vehicle and check each light is working.
