Drivers warned to get dashcams after viral video showing abuse and assault of taxi driver in Dublin

Drivers have been warned to get dashcams after footage showing the vicious assault of a taxi driver went viral.

The passenger is seen physically attacking the black driver, calling him a n****r in the disturbing footage, which has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times on social media.

The Co Kerry suspect voluntarily handed himself in to gardai on Sunday.

During the sickening footage the man can be seen leaning in towards the driver and shouting, “What’s your favourite position?” before describing him as a “n***er” multiple times.

The taxi driver looks confused as his passenger had been quiet moments before the verbal and physical tirade erupted.

The man – who appears to be highly intoxicated – can then be seen punching the driver and calls him a “f***ing c**t”, in the video shared on Twitter.

The aggressor, in his 30s, then takes off his seatbelt, and roars numerous times that he is a “police officer”.

He then gets out of the car and walks over to the driver’s side, at which point the taximan locks the cab and drives off without being paid.

Derek Devoy, who established Taxi Watch, a suicide prevention service run by his taxi drivers, shared the video on social media to track down the deranged passenger.

Mr Devoy was then contacted directly by the thug who asked him to take him to gardai.

And Mr Devoy has now urged taxi drivers to protect themselves by purchasing a dashcam.

He told Miriam O'Callaghan on RTE Radio One's Today With Sean O'Rourke: "That's the first thing I would do - get a dashcam and get a proper one, it's worth investing in a proper one."

Mr Devoy also said the fate of the man at the centre of the incident is in the hands of gardai.

He added: "It has happened now, he can't change what has happened, he just has to deal with it now and I just wanted to make sure that he got to the garda station.

"I didn't know if he would go in on his own, I just wanted to make sure that he did and it's done now and let the law deal with it now."
