Drivers warned they could lose licences in roadside police checks

Drivers may be at risk of huge fines and could even lose their licences as new roadside tests come in.

Across the UK, police are continuing checks on drivers eyesight by performing roadside tests putting many drivers at risk of a fine if they aren’t up to standard. YouGov data shows 30% of people haven’t had an eye test within the last two years, despite NHS recommendations.

Richard Evans, head of technical services at webuyanycar, told the ECHO: "Drivers without the correct level of vision are being warned of fines up to £1,000 or losing their license altogether.

"Under UK law, drivers must be able to read number plates up to 20 metres away and should let the DVLA know about any changes or medical conditions as soon as possible as it could affect their ability to drive safely. Our research found that almost all (93%) drivers say they’ve seen motoring costs increase over the last 12 months.

"With rising costs across the board, drivers should take extra precaution to ensure they don’t face additional charges and fines."

A study from LKQ Euro Car Parts found that seven in 10 UK drivers admitted their vision had become worse compared to when they passed their test. With more focus being put on the need for better eyesight when driving, the police have started doing roadside checks to ensure people on the roads are safe, the Express reports.
