Drivers warned 'slow down' as police carry out speed checks on Edinburgh roads

Drivers have been warned to slow down after police carried out speed checks on Edinburgh roads over the weekend.

Officers armed with speed guns were patrolling the Craigentinny and Fillyside areas of the city yesterday (November 9), after the local community voiced concerns over speeding in the area.

A spokesperson for Edinburgh Police's north east division said: "Speed Checks today in the Craigentinny & Fillyside areas in response to community reports. So slow down or face the consequences."

Meanwhile, road police have have been testing drivers for drugs after new legislation was introduced last month that means police can now use mouth swabs to test drivers for drugs at the roadside.

After stopping a vehicle on Friday (8 November) in Drylaw, officers recovered cannabis and the driver tested positive for cocaine.

A spokesperson for the unit said: "Stopped a vehicle in the Drylaw area last night for a bulb defect & no vehicle excise licence (VEL). Officers noted a strong smell of Cannabis. Vehicle & driver searched, Cannabis recovered. Driver provided a positive drugwipe for Cocaine. Driver arrested."
