Drivers warned of two weeks of delays as work begins on busy street

Drivers have been warned to prepare for delays as a key street is set to close for roadworks.

From Monday, March 9, there will be no access to Hough Lane, in Tyldesley , for people approaching from Sale Lane or Manchester Road (A577).

This will continue for two weeks, with one side of the street closed off to allow engineers to reach an old gas main.

The company behind the work says delays are "unavoidable" despite steps taken to minimise disruption.

It is part of a series of gas main replacement projects being completed by Cadent, the firm which manages much of the gas network in the North West.

Craig Horrocks, who is heading up the replacement programme, said: “What we’re doing is essential work to upgrade an ageing asset that’s simply reached the end of its working life.

"We always try to minimise the impact of work like this but, as we’re working in the road, some disruption is unavoidable. We expect this to take around two weeks and we thank people for their patience while we get this job done.”

The metal pipe set to be replaced supplies gas to thousands of homes in the area but is now so old that it might not be safe to use for much longer.

It is set to be replaced with a plastic alternative which will have a longer lifespan.
