Drivers warned of 'treacherous' conditions on roads hit by black ice

Drivers are being urged to take care on the roads of Merseyside this morning after frost overnight.

Police have warned of "treacherous" black ice in some areas as they call for caution.

Merseyside Police's Roads Policing Unit highlighted one of the busiest roads in the region - the East Lancs - as one road of concern.

The force account wrote on Twitter: "East Lancs, St Helens and Rainford appear particularly treacherous. Black ice reported across the area."

They were not the only police account to offer advice over social media, with Cheshire Police's Warrington neighbourhood team advising: "It's really icy outside today so please take care driving and avoid unnecessary travel where possible, we've already had reports of collisions this morning.

"Ensure your vehicle is fully defrosted, removing snow from the roof and giving yourself full visibility."

Roads in Skelmersdale and parts of South Sefton were also said to have been particularly icy.

Despite the hazardous conditions there were no reports of significant crashes or disruption on Merseyside's roads during the morning rush hour.

The North West Motorway Police reported several "minor" crashes on the M56, between Lymm and Hale but added "other than this the networks running well with no incidents of note".
