Drivers warned of nightworks and traffic changes at Sunderland's Trimdon Street roundabout

Night works and traffic changes will come into force at a city roundabout later this month as work continues on a new dual carriageway for Sunderland.

Last year construction work started on the third phase of the Sunderland Strategic Transport Corridor (SSTC).

When completed, the £70.8 million project will create a route through Pallion, running underneath the Queen Alexandra Bridge, into Deptford and onto the city centre.

This week, contractors Esh Civils sent an update letter to residents about upcoming surfacing works on the Trimdon Street Roundabout.

From March 30, works will take place for four nights between 8pm-4am.

The letter from construction liaison officer, Jen Anderson, states measures will be put in place to reduce disruption to residents.

It reads:“We appreciate this might be an inconvenience to you but we will do all we can to keep the noise and light disturbance to a minimum.”

During the night works, Trimdon Street roundabout will act as a through road with access restrictions in place.

These include:

  • Eastbound traffic will have access only onto Beach Street, not Deptford Terrace.
  • Westbound traffic will have access only onto Deptford Terrace, not Beach Street.
  • When exiting Beach Street, traffic will only be able to turn east, heading towards the city centre.
  • Traffic exiting Deptford Road will only be able to turn west, in the direction of the Queen Alexandra Bridge.

The SSTC project aims to create “improved connectivity” to the city centre, Port of Sunderland and regeneration areas.

The project is also expected to reduce city congestion, shorten journey times and boost road safety in the long-term.

Previous phases have included works at St Mary’s Boulevard and the Northern Spire bridge, which opened in August 2018.

Ongoing works include widening the Trimdon Street corridor between retail and residential areas alongside improvements to the Hylton Road and St Mary’s roundabouts.

Phase three of the project is estimated to be completed by Autumn 2021.
