Drivers warned of new driving rules that could come into force in August

Drivers are being warned that August could see see the introduction to new driving rules.

This comes after the Highway Code saw a huge overhaul of rules, changing who has priority to make roads safer for all road users. Then in May, drivers were warned of new traffic fines in May.

Now there are some possible changes coming that drivers should be aware of including a driving licence change which is worth keeping an eye on for updates.

Most recently, a new law was passed that allowed healthcare staff and nurses to complete a medical questionnaire rather than just a GP. This came into force in July in an attempt to reduce the backlog of driving licence applications.

Driving licence changes

Back in May, British drivers in Spain were warned that they would be banned from driving if they used their UK driving licence and an alternative was not given. However, expats could hear good news as negotiations continue between Spanish and UK officials.

As reported by Express, the UK Embassy in Spain confirmed talks would continue in August following meetings in July. It is hoped that expats will be given six months to simply exchange their UK licence for a Spanish one without having to take a test. Within this time, Brits should be able to use their UK licence.

This will apply to anyone who holds a UK driving licence whether they were in Spain before the end of 2020 or whether they move in the future. The Embassy acknowledged that it would be impossible to give an exact date and would continue to provide updates.

Self-driving cars

The Transport Select Committee announced that August 22 is the last day for evidence to be submitted as part of its inquiry into self-driving vehicles.

This comes as the Department for Transport unveiled its plans to create a “self-driving revolution” in April for Britain to become a leader in autonomous technology.

As part of the call for evidence, the Committee requested information on the likely uses of self-driving cars as well as the progress of trials, potential implications and any safety concerns.
