Drivers warned of £2,500 Highway Code fine for not checking windshield wipers

Motorists could be handed a hefty £2,500 fine for not keeping their windshield wipers in good shape.

The essential bit of kit is especially crucial on the rainy roads of the UK, though is often overlooked.

People have been warned to check windshield wipers by motoring organisations as failing to drive with a clear windscreen could open drivers up to being fined.

An undamaged, clear windscreen is essential for motorists to drive safely, and vehicle leasing firm Vanarama warned a working set of wipers is essential to ensure drivers can see the road clearly at all times, Liverpool Echo reports.

Annex 6 of the Highway Code refers to vehicle maintenance, safety and security, and says: "Windscreens and windows MUST be kept clean and free from obstructions to vision."

Wipers must be in good condition if drivers want to avoid a potential fine - as well as penalty points.

If wiper blades are split or blunt, this could prevent them from clearing the windscreen properly, or leaving distracting streaks.

If they're not working effectively, you could face a fine of up to £2,500 and three points on your licence.
