Drivers warned of £100 fine and 3 points on licence with new motorway change

Drivers who break a new motorway rule have been warned of a £100 fine and three points on their licence.

Highways England has confirmed how automatic cameras are now able to catch drivers who drive in closed lanes.

You can tell a lane is closed with signs having a red 'X' above the lane and cameras are now able to recognise cars heading down these areas.

"There's no eXcuse - don't ignore the red X," Highways England has warned.

"It's illegal to drive in a red X lane and motorway cameras can now automatically detect drivers who flout the law.

"You could receive a £100 fine and get three points on your licence. #KeepUsAllMoving".

But drivers have reacted with unhappiness, as one said: "Signs don't make sense some days," BirminghamLive reports.

"60, 40, 50, national, 40, drivers don't know what the hell to do, and then we wonder why accidents happen as people are breaking to adhere to the law."

A second agreed, saying: "Maybe you should also stop putting up nonsense signs on the motorway such as road works ahead when there isn’t."

They then continued: "Or workforce ahead when there’s been a dangerous car crash. And stop with 40mph for 1m then change to 60mph then down to 50 without 1m distance".
