Drivers warned not to let fallen leaves gather under car bonnets this autumn to avoid costly repairs

Motorists have been warned to check under their car bonnets this autumn to avoid costly repairs to their vehicle in the future.

Most drivers will know that extra care needs to be taken to keep their car in good condition during cold winter weather, from topping up the antifreeze to ensuring you have a de-icer and scraper handy. But before the chilliest temperatures approach, there are also things to be on the lookout for in autumn.

One issue that can arise is from falling leaves, which can pose a problem if they collect under the bonnet of your car, the Daily Record reports . If enough leaves are left to gather, they can block the drain under the bonnet.

The blockage could cause water to collect, which may lead to problems with rust if it is not sorted out. The water could also turn to ice in the colder months, which could leave you struggling to open and close the bonnet.

The advice comes from automotive experts at Peter Vardy , who have scoured car maintenance hashtags on TikTok to find the best top tips out there. Ensuring you clear out leaves from under the bonnet is one of three top tips hand-picked by the business.

Another handy hack is using long socks to cover your windshield wipers at night. This will help to stop them freezing over when the temperature drops overnight and save time defrosting in the morning.

Motorists are also advised to avoid turning the heating on in their vehicle straight away on those crisp wintery mornings. Drivers should let their car run for a minute or two before they start driving and put the heating on, as the heat is pulled from the engine and the system will just blow more cold air into the car if the engine has not had time to heat up.
