Drivers warned about 'rainbow glare' risk during spring sunshine and showers

Drivers taking to the roads this spring will often experience all four seasons in just one journey. And the mix of sunshine and surprise showers can make for particularly tricky driving conditions.

Halfords has warned about a common visual phenomenon it has dubbed 'rainbow glare' that is common after rainfall. It is the result of a bright light reflecting off a wet road, causing a multi-coloured halo-like effect to appear.

When driving, this can be particularly distracting. It can make it difficult to see the road ahead or other vehicles, especially when the sun is shining.

Andy Turbefield, Halfords’ Head of Quality, said: "In these instances, it’s important to slow down and use caution, as the situation on the road can change at any minute. I also recommend purchasing a pair of polarised sunglasses or a sun visor extension - which are available at Halfords for as little as £7.99, to reduce the glare experienced."

He said another way to improve visibility during the spring season is to keep your vehicle's windscreen clean both inside and out. And be aware of potholes - standing water on the roads can make them almost impossible to see.

Andy said: "To avoid damage to your car, safely manoeuvre around large puddles and bodies of water when out and about. If you do happen to hit a pothole while driving, whilst there may not be any visible signs of damage, it’s always best to get your vehicle checked after as there may be issues with your tracking and wheel alignment, tyres or suspension.

"At Halfords, we offer a number of free checks - including tyre and suspension checks, that will give you full peace of mind that your vehicle is in good and safe condition.

"Consider whether the drive is essential - during times when the weather and road conditions are particularly poor, a good question to ask yourself is whether it is an essential journey or if it can be made later or on another day. Sometimes, the best way to stay safe is by staying off the road."
