Drivers urged to use button found in every car for money saving 'hack'

Almost every car has a little button that isn't widely known about but can help to improve fuel consumption.

Drivers can save money literally at the press of a button with a useful fuel and money saving 'hack'. The tip has been popularised by TikTok star "Megan's Bubble" and also has the backing of an AA spokesperson.

Taking to the video sharing platform, the user captioned her clip: "Car tips and tricks. I bet you didn't know what this car button is actually used for."

She pointed to the air recirculation button, which uses a car with an arrow inside as its symbol. The social media user explained: "Essentially what it's going to do for you, it means that you are recirculating the air inside the car.

"So if it's extraordinarily hot inside of your car when you first get in you want to turn this off so that you suck in the outside air. If you're sitting in front of other cars where you'll be getting all the exhaust fumes sucked into your car, you use this button so that the air inside your car recirculates and you don't suck in all that bad air."

Megan's Bubble shared the proper use for the little-known button (megansbubble/Tiktok)

The AA backed up the 'hack' as a spokesperson, Luke Bosdet, said: "If you don’t know what the recirculation button does and have been blasting the air con to try to cool passengers on the back seat, you’ve been missing a trick and paying for it." It is best to turn the AC off after a few minutes and use the button to keep cool air trapped inside the car.

He added: "It is possible on longer trips and faster roads that the air vents will generate enough air flow for the car to remain comfortable after the air con has done its initial job and can be switched off."

Despite the reduction in fuel consumption the RAC adds: "Don’t use your air conditioning unless you really have to as it uses engine power and therefore increases fuel consumption. This goes for heat as well as cooling, so try to dress for the weather, even inside your car, if fuel efficiency is a big concern."
