Drivers urged to 'slow down' as seven people die on Irish roads in two days

The Road Safety Authority has warned drivers to ‘slow down’ and ‘expect the unexpected’ as seven people have been killed on Irish roads in the past two days.

Brian Farrell from the RSA spoke this afternoon on RTE’s News at One after it was confirmed that four people were killed on Irish roads in the last two days.

A further three young men were also confirmed dead in Co Tyrone after their car was struck by a lorry.

Speaking about the tragedies that have occurred over the last few days, Farrell said that this accounts for the total number of deaths that occurred throughout the entire month of November.

Mr Farrell went on to point out that 900 people have also been seriously injured on the roads this year.

His advice for drivers as we head into the New Year is to slow down, drive at a safe speed for the current conditions, do not drive while impaired and always wear your seat belt.

Drivers should also ensure they're always on the lookout for other road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and people riding horses.

Among those who have passed away in road accidents over the past two days was an 80-year-old cyclist, after a collision with a car in Dublin.

A man in his 30s died in Wicklow after a crash between a bus and a car last night on the main southbound carriageway of the M11 between junction 16 and 17 at Rathnew.

Another man died following a two-car collision in Co Mayo yesterday evening and was a passenger in one of the vehicles.

Another man in his early 20s died following a two-car collision in Co Wexford on St Stephen's Day.

All of these recent fatal incidents bring the total of deaths on Irish roads to 137 in 2021.
