Drivers urged to park their cars in a specific direction to make defrosting easier

The frosty weather is well and truly upon us, and for drivers this will inevitably mean getting up extra early to defrost their cars before work. Although this isn't exactly the most enjoyable winter task, you can make this a bit easier for yourself by parking your vehicle in a specific direction.

According to driving experts from Lotus Car Rental in Iceland, making sure to park your car in the right place can save you precious time on cold mornings when you'd much rather be enjoying a nice hot cuppa. Motorists keen for an extra five minutes cosied up in bed are therefore advised to park their car facing east.

This is because the sun rises in the east, meaning the rays can melt away windscreen ice without the need for excessive scraping. Of course, this will naturally depend on much sunlight you get as well as how early you set off in the morning.

Motorists wanting to budge ice from their windscreens may also want to consider a nifty 12p hack, using an item which they may well already have at the back of their fridge. According to Lotus Car Rental experts, a simple onion can break down frost a treat, and the method couldn't be easier.

All you have to do is chop an onion in half and rub it all over your windows and windscreen in the evening, and this should stop frost from forming by the time the morning rolls around. A potato apparently will also do the trick, and may well be a better option for those who don't like oniony smells.

Experts at Car Lease Special Offers have also suggested using white wine vinegar to clean dirt from your car this winter, which should also help to tackle frost.

The expert team advised: "The night before you use your vehicle, pour a mixture of 3 parts vinegar to 1 part water onto your windshield and windows, and you will have a frost-free windshield".
