Drivers urged not to panic buy petrol as long queues at forecourts reported

There are reports of long queues at petrol stations as motorists appear to be topping up their tanks amid fears prices could rise following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said one of the consequences of Putin sending his armed force into Ukraine is a 'spike' in oil prices.

Russia is the world's largest natural gas exporter and second biggest oil producer, selling mainly to European countries, MirrorOnline reports.

Prices at the pumps have already been rising as oil edged past $90 a barrel, but the Ukraine invasion has now seen it jump above $100.

There are warnings the price of petrol could soar to more than £1.70 a litre.

The sight of queues forming outside petrol station has frustrated many motorists, with there being no indication that people need to change their petrol buying patterns.

There have been reports of busier than usual petrol forecourts around London, Hull, Winchester and Cheltenham as people try to get petrol now in case it rises in price more in the days to come.

In London, one person wrote on Twitter: "Long queues at every petrol station this lunchtime on the outskirts of London.

"Reminds me of the recent petrol crisis.

"I'm guessing many believe the war in Ukraine will increase the cost of petrol significantly, so they are filling up their cars now?"

Motorists on twitter urged their fellow drivers not to panic buy.

Karen @KarenLCone1963 said: "Here we go again people just don't learn! Its going to have a knock on effect what about emergency services?"
