Drivers stuck in long queues have been spotted 'playing football and cricket' in empty lanes on the M6 and enjoying cups of tea.
In scorching 27C heat, motorists have been pictured getting out of their cars to sit on the side of the road, some looking for alternative ways to kill the time.
The gridlock comes after a lorry crashed into a bridge between Junctions 17 and 18 at around 8am this morning.
Traffic was made worse after a car broke down between Junctions 16 and 17 and one lane had to be shut.
One driver caught up in the queues tweeted a picture of motorists enjoying a cuppa added: "If you have ever heard the saying "Quintessentially British" and thought, what's that, please enjoy this visual description. Nothing stops elevenses!!!"
Another person caught up in the delays tweeted: "Whilst the #M6 is closed, a group of lads use the empty lanes to play a round of cricket. 4 hours down, possibly another 4 to go."
While others pleaded for cold drinks and snacks: "Stuck on the closed M6 southbound near Knutsford Someone heading north please chuck me a cold can of Irn Bru and some pickled onion Monster Munch thanks."
Here's how other drivers are spending their day on the M6:
