Drivers stuck for hours on M74 in traffic chaos after crash shuts northbound carriageway

Drivers on the M74 endured travel chaos on Sunday evening after a crash brought traffic to standstill.

Motorists were stuck in traffic for up to five hours after the collision, which took place along the stretch of road that links Glasgow and Gretna.

The incident, which happened at around 4pm, had sparked a closure of the northbound road near Abington in South Lanarkshire.

Traffic was being diverted off the motorway at Junction 13 before the road was eventually reopened at at 9.45pm - more than five hours after the crash.

However Traffic Scotland has warned that despite lanes being up and running again, it will take time for the disruption to fully clear.

Vehicles appeared to have been diverted onto the B7078 before rejoining the M74 at Lesmahagow but traffic on the B road was also very slow moving.

One eyewitness stuck behind the crash scene on the M74 says that officers began slowly turning the traffic stuck behind the incident around and sending them southbound down a northbound lane.

One motorist, Donna McKay, tweeted at 5.40pm: "Been stuck on M74 for 1.5 hours so far. Doesn't look like it's moving anytime soon.

"Bad accident at J11 NB, 3 police cars and police van already attending. Hope ppl are ok."

Another person stuck in the traffic, @katgiggles, wrote: "As much as being stuck on the motorway for nearly two hours sucks, it really makes you grateful for what you have when you really think about what might be at the start of the queue.

"Hoping everyone involved is ok".

Motorists were being advised to use an alternative road amid the chaos.

It is not known if there are any injuries.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland confirmed that officers were at the scene.

It comes after a weekend of misery on the roads across the country.
