Drivers stranded in flash floods near Manchester park just a day after Storm Barra battered city

Drivers have become stranded after becoming stuck in a flood beneath a bridge near Stockport.

Pictures shared to social media show vans and cars struggling to drive through a flooded area underneath a bridge on Crossley Road earlier today.

The area, just beside Cringle Park, is a known flooding hotspot, falling victim to heavy rainfall numerous times over the past few years.

It has now been closed off, with a car and a van stuck within the cordon.

It comes just a day after Storm Barra brought winds of 50 mph to Manchester.

A car was left completely submerged in August after torrential rain caused the dip under the bridge to flood, forcing police to cordon it off.

It is thought the water build up has occurred following strong wind and rain during Storm Barra yesterday.

The bridge was also pictured with a red Volkswagen completely submerged beneath it in January 2021, with flooding also causing chaos in July 2019.

This afternoon, December 8, vehicles were pictured struggling to pull themselves out of the deep water.

Social media users shared pictures of the flooding to Twitter.

One person who says he has to drive under the bridge on the way to work every day took a clip of his car going through the water.

He told the M.E.N: "It is been like this for years.

"I drive down here every day for work. As soon as heavy rain hits it always floods.

"There surely has to be a fix. My brakes are spongy after driving through it."

Transport for Greater Manchester told the M.E.N it would look into any possible diversions.

Stockport Council and the Fire and Rescue Service has also been contacted for a comment.
