Drivers stopped after horses escape on to two of Merseyside's busiest roads

Drivers were brought to a stop on two of Merseyside's busiest roads after horses escaped their stables.

Road blocks were used to halt traffic on the M57 and the East Lancashire Road while efforts were made to round up the animals.

The measures were in place after nine horses fled a stables in Knowsley, escaping through a broken fence.

Images released by Merseyside Police showed the horses being led by officers and stables staff after they had been caught.

The force tweeted: "Thanks to motorists for their patience while our officers dealt with nine horses on the M57 in Knowsley this morning.

"We assisted returning the horses, which escaped through a damaged fence panel, back to their stables which resulted in roadblocks on the M57 and East Lancs Road."
