Drivers slammed for 'putting people at risk' after accident on M5

Motorists who drove the wrong way on the M5 have been warned not to break the law.

Highways England responded after spotting "traffic driving the wrong way into Avonmouth" after a crash northbound between J18 and J17.

The organisation tweeted: "This is illegal. You are putting yourselves, our roadworkers and other road users at great risk."

The incident was one of two which caused traffic disruption on the motorway yesterday (November 16).

A woman suffered serious head injuries after an accident involving a lorry shortly before 6am.

Avon and Somerset Constabulary were called to reports of a two vehicle crash between junctions 22 and 23 southbound.

A police spokesperson said: "The incident involved a lorry and a car.

"The occupant of the car – a woman – has been taken to hospital with serious head injuries."

The motorway was closed from J22 (southbound) and remain closed for nine hours to allow collision investigators to carry out an examination of the scene.

The woman remains in a critical condition in hospital today (November 17).
