Drivers rescued from cars as burst water main leaves road 'looking like swimming pool'

Eight people had to be rescued from their vehicles after a burst water main left a busy road in London looking like a river.

The North Circular Road, which is closed in both directions at the junction with the Brent Cross Interchange, has been likened to a river.

Dramatic footage shows water gushing across the road, with cars unable to go any further.

London Fire Brigade has had to free drivers from cars.

One passer-by posted on Twitter: "North Circular at Brent Cross looks like a swimming pool. Avoid at all costs."

And Brent North MP Barry Gardiner wrote: "To all my constituents travelling home this evening intending to use the North Circular.

"Please be aware of the flooding at the Brent Cross intersection."

Another onlooker posted: "Avoid the North circular unless you own that James Bond car that turns into a submarine."

It has caused lengthy tailbacks, with a clean-up operation likely to take some considerable time.

A spokeswoman from London Fire Brigade told Mirror Online that officers remain at the scene.

No one is believed to have been hurt in the incident.

She said: "We were called to the scene at 3.37pm.

"We helped to remove eight people from their vehicles."

A spokeswoman for Thames Water said: "We're sorry to anyone who has been disrupted by a burst pipe on the North Circular Road.

"We know this has happened at an especially difficult time and understand the concerns our customers may have.

"Our specialist engineers are on their way to investigate the problem, and they will be doing everything they can to resolve the issue as quickly as possible."
