Drivers 'pulling over with blown tyres' after hole opens up on M53

Cars were reportedly pulling off a section of the M53 with blown tyres after a "foot wide" hole opened up in the middle lane.

Highways England confirmed they attended the section of M53 motorway, close to the B&Q, earlier today to carry out repairs to the pothole after people took to social media to complain about vehicles being forced off the road due to damage from the hole.

Posting on Facebook, one person said: "The hole on M53 has opened up again. Middle lane coming onto the motorway from B&Q. There's cars with blown tyres pulled over. Be careful."

Others said they had hit the hole themselves while travelling along the motorway, with one person saying: "That's what happened to someone last night, my Danny helped after 100 that didn't, couldn't leave an older couple stuck. Hope it's sorted before a serious accident happens"

Another added: "I managed to avoid it yesterday it was about a foot wide I reported it to the highway authority, I think they thought I was having a laugh."

One person said: "Yes unfortunately I hit it yesterday now my car sounds worse than it does normally. Trip to garage assess the damage."

Others spoke of traffic backed up earlier today, with one person saying: "It was murder coming to work this morning! I was late xx"

A spokesperson for Highways England said: "We attended to repair this pothole earlier with a rolling road block to hold traffic briefly while the repair was effected" adding that it was "all done and dusted by 10am" and it is understood that traffic is now flowing without disruption.
