Drivers line streets at funeral of dad who drowned in Loch Lomond trying to save son

A dad who drowned in Loch Lomond while trying to save his son was given a fitting send off in Glasgow.

Asim Riaz, 41, died on July 24 along with family friend Edina Olahova, 29, and her son Rana Haris Ali, nine.

Asim's son, aged 7, survived the tragedy.

Members of the the App Drivers and Couriers Union lined the streets for a 'procession of cabs' in honour of the Uber driver as his coffin arrived at the Linn Cemetery in Glasgow after a service at the Central Mosque in Glasgow.

Asim's father, Riaz Ahmad, who came to Scotland from Pakistan, for the funeral, thanked the drivers for their gesture.

He told the Scottish Sun : “We’re extremely grateful for this kind gesture. It’s hard to put into words how thankful we are to the people of Glasgow and the Scottish Government for standing with us.

“My son’s journey has concluded with the love and support of Glasgow. I’d humbly request everyone to please remember my son in your prayers.”

Asim, Edina and Haris were among seven people who lost their lives in drowning tragedies during the same weekend.

Connor Markward, 16, from Glasgow, passed away on Friday, July 23, at Loch Lomond while Asim Raza, Edina Olahova, and Rana Haris Ali, died in the same body of water the following day.

Dean Irvine, 11, also tragically drowned in Stonehouse, Lanarkshire on July 24 while 13-year-old Jamie Gilchrist lost his life in a Lanark river.

Aman Sharma was pulled from Loch Lubnaig in Stirlingshire on July 25 and later died.
