Drivers issued MOT warning over removing common item from car or risk failing test

Drivers could fail their MOT test if they forget to remove a common item from the car.

According to motoring experts, drivers should be carrying out unusual checks on their vehicles to make sure they pass. The annual MOT can be a big concern for drivers with many failing on small faults which are easy to forget to check prior to sending the car off to the garage.

As Liverpool Echo reports, simple things like having no washer fluid for the windscreen or faulty number plates are among the different reasons why MOT test centres fail drivers.

Motoring experts from LeaseCar.uk and its sister site LeaseElectricCar.co.uk have put together a number of checks drivers should make to ensure their car passes the test.

Here are their top tips for an MOT pass:

Remove the air freshener

While it’s an interior addition which many drivers like to have, drivers are being urged to remove the dangling air freshener when it’s time for the test. Technically, it can be viewed as blocking the driver’s view and an obstruction of vision can lead to an automatic failure.

Number plates

It's crucial and a legal requirement to have fully functioning licence plate lights, so double check the lights are working before an MOT check or it can lead to a penalty.

Frayed seat belts

Drivers must check the condition of the seat belt before an MOT. If they left to fray it can become dangerous if the condition worsens. If they aren’t clicking in or they come out once pulled hard, then a failure is imminent.

Fill up on screen wash

One of the most unthought of checks to make before an MOT is checking the amount of screen wash in the car. It’s an easy mistake to make but could lead to a failure.

Reversing lights

Added in 2018, vehicles used from September 2009 must have working reversing lights otherwise it will lead to a failed MOT. Some road users are unaware of this new rule change, so make sure to test those bulbs.

Rubber seal on fuel cap

If there is a strong smell of petrol, it likely means your fuel cap is worn out. Make sure to check the condition of your fuel cap when filling up the car and up towards the check date.

Cracks on the number plate

You need to check for all the minor details to get your car to pass its MOT and one of them is noticeable cracks on the number plate. One crack covering a letter on the plate can be the break or make between a pass and a fail.
