Drivers in tears after giant sculpture of leaping frog 'erected' on roundabout

Drivers have been left in stitches after a giant sculpture of a frog leaping over a lily pad was 'erected' on a roundabout.

The 8ft-tall artwork was installed near Keele University in Staffordshire - but locals think its metal stand resembles a huge phallus.

The sculpture was intended to highlight the Newcastle-under-Lyme's animals and plants but has quickly become a source of hilarity.

Town resident Steve Gatehouse, 42, said: "When I first saw it, I took a double take.

"From the angle I drove past it, it looks like a giant frog having a good time on a plump pair of buttocks.

"I absolutely creased when I saw it and now can't stop chuckling whenever I drive past it."

Social media users have also been quick to comment on the frog statue since it appeared on Monday.

Writing on Facebook, one person said: "Oh my god, only in my home town can they install a statue of huge sh*gging frog!

"Wonder what Miss Piggy has got to say about that!"

The sculpture takes centre stage on Gallowstree Lane roundabout - the largest traffic island in Staffordshire.

The sculpture was commissioned by Newcastle Borough Council to highlight indigenous animals and plants as part of its annual Britain in Bloom campaign.

Councillor Jill Waring, Cabinet member for leisure, culture and heritage, said: "The installation of the frog on this main gateway into Newcastle has been delayed for some time due to the pandemic.

"But it's great to finally add an amphibian to our growing collection of flora and fauna models which, when complemented by sustainable planting displays, really brighten up our normally busy roundabouts and catch residents' attention.

"They are well-liked, attract a lot of positive comments and put a smile on people's faces, something which is needed now more than ever.

"It's nice to do something different which not only raises awareness of animals and plants local to the area but also gives young people invaluable experience and the opportunity to develop their skills."

Artworks Manager Phil Brown, who helped install the sculpture, said: "We were delighted to be asked to create an attractive, recognisable landmark to adorn another of Newcastle's roundabouts and add to the ever-improving scenery of the town."
