Drivers from Scotland breach lockdown after travelling to Wales to 'see friends'

Covidiots from Scotland have been reported for travelling more than 250 miles to Anglesey in a breach of coroanvirus lockdown rules.

Attention was drawn to two cars in Valley, Anglesey, on Friday and officers from North Wales Police pulled them over.

It was discovered the vehicles had travelled from Scotland so the occupants could "visit friends".

Police also discovered the drivers of the cars did not hold valid insurance so were driving illegally.

A spokesman from North Wales Police said: "Two drivers reported in Valley for driving without insurance.

"Also reported for breaching Covid travel restrictions having travelled from Scotland to see friends."

Coronavirus regulations set by the Welsh Government stipulate that travel should be restricted to "essential reasons" and people should not mix with others outside of their own household.

On Saturday, the latest Public Health Wales figures revealed a further 55 people in Wales have died as a result of Covid-19 and 1,129 cases have been reported.

The overall death toll with lab-confirmed coronavirus now stands at 4,226 in Wales.

Following the latest figures, the Wales infection rate is now 344.8 cases per 100,000 people based on the seven days up to January 11. That is a decrease on the 371.6 previously reported.

PHW data also shows 126,375 people have now received a first dose of the coronavirus vaccine as at 10pm on Thursday, January 14. There are 129 people who have received both of their vaccine jabs, as of the same time period.

Though these figures will have increased on Friday, vaccination statistics are not updated by Public Health Wales over the weekend.
