Drivers facing five mile delays after crash on M56

Drivers are facing five mile delays this afternoon following a two-car smash on the M56.

Motorists have been told to expect delays of at least an hour with vehicles currently at a standstill on the eastbound carriageway.

Emergency services including fire and ambulance are at the scene.

Two lanes are closed and traffic is queueing from junction 12 at Runcorn to junction 14 at Chester Services.

Travel time is around 60 minutes.

Traffic was briefly held between 12.35 and 12.40pm.

Highways England have advised drivers to allow extra time for their journey.

They tweeted: "There are 30 minute delays on the approach to this #M56 incident (above usual journey times) spanning 5 miles back to J14. "Average speeds on the approach to J12 are 5 mph. Please allow extra journey time."

They later added: "# M56 delays continue to rise and currently stand at 60 mins above usual journey times. There was a brief hold on traffic to allow emergency services to work at scene however traffic has been released.

"Lane 2 and 3 remain closed within J12."
