Drivers face £100 fine and three points if they block bike boxes

Drivers who enter bike boxes at traffic lights could face a £100 fine and three points on their licence.

Bike boxes - or as they're officially known, Advanced Stop Lines - are usually marked on the road with a bike symbol painted inside and are found in front of traffic lights.

They are designed to keep cyclists and vehicles at a safe distance apart.

But the rules are rarely followed and now a cycling group wants pedestrians and cyclists to report drivers who don't follow the law to the police

Leicester Police have launched a new online reporting facility on their website, encouraging people to capture culprits and submit footage in hopes of efficient law enforcement, reports Leicestershire Live .

Eric Ludlow, spokesman of the Leicestershire Cycling Campaign Group, said: "As far as I know there haven't been any prosecutions of drivers in bike boxes but vehicles enter them all the time.

"I've stood at one junction for ten minutes and seen three vehicles enter a bike box in that short time."

He said he was shocked that a lot of drivers did not know about bike boxes, which have been around for 30 years.

Mr Ludlow explained that if the public could stop for a few minutes when they are walking past a bike box and use their mobile phones to record what happens, it will make all drivers aware of the need to respect bike boxes.

He said: "If anyone is recorded driving into the box when the lights are on red, they will be reported, and could end up with a £100 fine and three points on their licence."
