Many cars now hold a lot of technology - giving drivers live updates of traffic jams and speed camera warnings.
But all this technology could come at a price, with a new report from Hippo Motor Finance warning that using your new tech - even when stopped at lights - could result in three points on your licence and a fine of up to £1,000.
Tom Preston, Hippo Motor Finance managing director, said: “Connected cars and the in-car technology they come with are a fantastic asset for drivers to have.
"However, motorists need to be wary of road rules when using devices, such as in-built sat nav systems, to avoid a heavy fine, penalty points or even a driving ban.”
The problem is that driving laws state that you have to be in full control your vehicle at all times, including when stopped at lights or stopped in a traffic jam, reports Mirror Online.
And if police think a driver is not in control of their car because they’re distracted by new tech, motorists could be prosecuted, with three penalty points and a maximum fine of £1,000 fine.
Preston added: “Connected cars are fantastic in how they bring first-rate communication, navigation and entertainment together and right to a driver’s fingertips.
"However, all this can come at a price if people are distracted by the in-car technology.
"Motorists need to take care when driving these cars to avoid road accidents by making sure their full attention is on the road at all times."
