Drivers could face penalty points for wearing Halloween costumes behind wheel

Drivers wearing obstructive Halloween attire behind the wheel could be hit with a horrifying €80 fine or penalty points this spooky season.

Insurance broker Chill has warned drivers that wearing a visually obstructive Halloween costume could be classed as careless driving. The use of masks can significantly affect vision, while wearing dress up gloves can affect people’s ability to control the steering wheel and the gear stick of a car.

The €80 fine issued for careless driving can be significantly increased if the matter is taken to court. Careless driving that seriously endangers other road users can warrant a separate fine of up to a staggering €5000.

The Road Traffic Act 1961 defines careless driving as “driving without reasonable consideration” for other road users while operating a vehicle. The fine is typically issued when drivers fail to stop at junctions and traffic lights or ignore rules of the road.

Chill recommends that people avoid wearing costumes behind the wheel in order to protect their insurance premium. They also suggest that people who receive penalty points be transparent about this with their insurance providers as they often heighten insurance costs.

Additionally, drivers are also encouraged to avoid driving while wearing long skirts or chunky boots, as they can get in the way of pedal control.
