Drivers could be slapped with £5k fine for transporting their Christmas tree home

Although artificial Christmas trees are getting more popular, having a real one is for some families a must.

Once you've selected the perfect tree, getting it into your home isn't without its challenges. Wrestling a 6th plus bundle into your car isn't all fun and games.

But it turns out fitting it into your car isn't the only thing you need to worry about when it comes to Christmas tree shopping.

Experts at Your Red Car have drivers could risk being find up to £5,000 for unknowingly breaking several driving laws – and you could also be putting your health and safety at risk.

The driving offences you could be at risk of committing is "causing or likely to cause danger by reason of load or passengers", or "inconsiderate driving".

To avoid making this Christmas even more expensive than it needs to be, the experts have provided four tips for how you can transport your tree safely.

Don't bring too many people

Picking a Christmas tree may feel like a fun family activity, but it's not practical when it comes to transporting the tree home.

For safety reasons, you should only take the people who can fit in the vehicle while also fitting the tree in.

You can keep windows open, but you need to make sure the branches aren't sticking out where they can damage other cars or obstruct the driver's view.

You can also risk a £100 fine for driving with your boot open, so consider this if you don't have room.

Wrap something around the tree

When you buy a Christmas tree there will most likely be an option to wrap it in netting.

If this isn't doable, you could use cling film or bungee cord to make it easier to transport.

This will also help prevent damage and prevent flailing branches from distracting the driver.

Install a roof rack

Roof racks are an investment, but they can make things a lot easier when it comes to transporting larger items.

Keep in mind that the tree shouldn't stick out dangerously, as is stressed in the Highway Code.

It should also not disrupt the driver's vision or mirrors.

Adjust your driving

As you'll be driving with excess load, you should be more aware of dangers.

For example, if you have to make an emergency stop, it could cause the tree to move and cause injury.

Drivers are warned to "pay attention whilst driving and stick to the speed limit".

Your Red Car adds: "Save the Christmas tunes for when you get home - music can be an added distraction."
