Drivers could be fined £1,000 for swearing on the road

Drivers are being warned to remain calm behind the wheel, as they could face a £1,000 fine and three points on their licence if they're caught swearing at someone on the road.

Everyone has seen bad driving on the road, with people tailgating you or pulling out unexpectedly, but people should avoid giving into road rage because they could be slapped with a hefty fine.

There are many potential stressful situations which could occur on the road and it may feel good to let another driver know they have annoyed you.

But road users have a duty of care to one another and any anti-social behaviour displayed whilst behind the wheel could land you in trouble

Drivers can be handed a penalty for “disorderly conduct” under the Crime and Disorder Act 1998.

If you are caught swearing at another road user, verbally or with a hand gesture, you could be fined up to 75 percent of your weekly wage, capped at £1,000.

Drivers could also be fined for "not being in full control of a vehicle" if they take their hands off the wheel.

This includes rude hand gestures or aggressive pointing.

This offence could land you a £1,000 fine and three penalty points.

Aldan Ibbetson, spokesperson at Number1Plates, said: “Even if another road user has been driving inconsiderately, has cut you up or if they themselves are experiencing road rage, motorists are advised to remain calm and their anger in check. Your hands should remain on the wheel and your eyes should be on the road.”
