Drivers could soon need to beware as a landmark Whitley Bay venue could soon be installing cameras to stop the "abuse" of its car park.
Parking Eye has applied for permission to install an ANPR system and warning sign at Spanish City car park.
Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) covers a wide range of camera technology that automatically reads vehicle number plates then records information about that plate.
Parking Eye use ANPR to record the details of drivers that overstay or flout other parking rules and send them fines.
If the plans go ahead the parking management firm will install an ANPR camera on a column, signs and pay and display machines to monitor entry and exit to the 60-bay car park.
A planning statement from the firm claimed that the proposals would reduce the amount of "abuse" of the site and ensure that customers could get parked.
It said: "The proposal seeks to provide management of the existing car park to reduce car park abuse and ensure that spaces are available for genuine site users."
The document also said that as the land is already a car park so it won't significantly impact its appearance.
It added: "The proposal will ensure that the existing car park is used
more effectively and reduce the amount of abuse that currently occurs."
North Tyneside Council will decide on the proposals in April.
