Driver with decade-old warrants congratulated cop for uncovering aliases: police

Dec. 05--A Lake Villa man pulled over for a traffic stop congratulated a Riverside police officer when the officer ran the driver's fingerprints and got him to reveal he had been using multiple false identities and birth dates to escape warrants for a decade, police said.

Jose O. Trujillo, 37, is charged with driving with suspended registration, driving with expired license plates, driving with no insurance and driving while his license was suspended, Riverside police said in a news release. He also was placed into custody on outstanding warrants from Lake County, the oldest of them from 2005.

Trujillo, who at first gave his name as Jose O. Tregilio, eventually told investigators he had been using false identifications, birth dates and names for the past 10 years, which went unnoticed by multiple law enforcement agencies that failed to fingerprint him during previous arrests, officials said.

Police stopped Trujillo about 11:43 a.m. Tuesday, when an officer on patrol noticed Trujillo was driving on the 200 block of Lawton Road with an expired registration, according to the release. After checking the sticker on the license plate, the officer realized the plates were suspended because of an insurance violation.

Trujillo, of the 100 block of Oak Knoll Drive in Lake Villa, handed the officer Mexican identification with the false name "Jose O. Tregilio," and told the officer he did not have a valid Illinois license, proof of insurance or additional identification. When the officer ran the name and birth date, he found Trujillo, under the alias, had his license suspended for a previous DUI conviction, police said. The officer took Trujillo into custody.

Riverside police later ran Trujillo's fingerprints and uncovered warrants issued under several aliases for Trujillo: a 2005 warrant for a DUI charge out of Lake County, with a bond of $35,000; a 2009 warrant for aggravated felony DUI and possession of a controlled substance charges out of Lake County, with a bond of $150,000; and a 2009 escape penal institution warrant out of Lake County for failing to report for periodic imprisonment, also with a bond of $150,000.

"Mr. Trujillo actually congratulated the arresting officer for finding out who he really is and doing his job," police said in the release.

Trujillo is being held at Cook County Jail, and is due back in Maybrook Branch Court on Monday, according to jail records.
