Motorist with 68 points driving on UK roads - one of 1,300 with more than 12pts

There are calls for a crackdown on reckless drivers after it emerged someone with 68 points on their licence has not been banned.

A freedom of information request by the Lib Dems has revealed that, in total, 1,278 people with at least 12 points can still get behind the wheel.

The party is now urging the Conservatives to take action to keep roads safer.

Lib Dem Transport Spokesperson Sarah Olney said: “The Government should examine whether the right systems are in place to put the brakes on problem drivers.

"With fewer drivers on the road than ever before, now is the time to consider what can be done.”

The figures also reveal that over a million Brits have at least one point on their licence.

Amassing 12 or more can result in a ban.

Top judge Lord Justice Holroyde, who chairs the Sentencing Council, has previously justified why so many people have not been stripped of their licence.

He said: “There are legitimate reasons why this might happen: the law allows for such a disqualification to be avoided or reduced for reasons of exceptional hardship.”
