Driver who tried to follow police to an emergency to 'beat the traffic' has car seized

A driver who followed a police vehicle with its lights on towards the scene of a crash has had his car sezied.

Police say the man, who was driving a blue Seat four-by-four, had been stuck in a queue caused by a road traffic collision (RTC) on the A56, which runs between Bury and Lancashire.

Rather than waiting alongside other people for the traffic to clear, the driver pulled out behind a police car with its lights on and followed it in the direction of the crash.

Officers say they were also told that the man had been driving on the hard shoulder.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Lancashire Police said the man had been stopped and his car seized before being returned to a hire company.

Officers also released an image of the vehicle on social media stopped beside a police car.

"The driver of this hire vehicle tried to beat the traffic on the A56 by following a police car on blue lights which was attending an RTC further up the road which was the reason why traffic had built up," they said.

"Members of the public also reported he had been driving along the hard shoulder.

"Vehicle seized S59 and returned to hire company.

"Please be patient in traffic."
