Driver who overtook ambulance on 999 dash arrested after failing drugs test and breaching Covid-19 restrictions

A driver who 'flew' past an ambulance on its way to an emergency has been arrested after failing a drugs test and breaching Covid-19 restrictions.

Police in North Wales stopped the vehicle with five occupants inside.

Officers said that the group had travelled from Greater Manchester to North Wales for a drive.

The driver was arrested for failing a drug wipe, driving with no license and will also be reported for breaching Covid-19 regulations.

A spokesman for North Wales Police said: "This driver overtook an ambulance on an emergency run, it had its blue lights and sirens on driving above the speed limit and the driver still flew by at excess speed, with a tyre that could’ve blown at any time."

The HGC Uned Plismona'r Ffyrdd / NWP Roads Policing Unit officer found the vehicle and the five occupants from the Oldham area were searched.

On Friday it was announced by First Minister Mark Drakeford that lockdown restrictions will be eased.

For the first time in more than two months people in Wales will be able to arrange to meet others from different households outdoors.

In doing this, however, people must still follow social distancing and strict hand hygiene practices to control the spread of the virus.

"Local" means not travelling more than five miles from home.

The changes, which come in on Monday, June 1, will mean some who live close enough to their families might be able to see them in person for the first time in almost 70 days.
