Driver who 'nearly crashed' told police he was 'taking his friends home'

A driver who almost crashed into a barrier on a dual carriageway told police he was 'just taking his friends home'.

Police have arrested a man on suspicion of drink driving following the incident in Bolton.

The man behind the wheel of a Vauxhall Viva was stopped on Raikes Lane in the early hours of Monday morning, according to Greater Manchester traffic police.

The car was sighted without its headlights on, 'nearly colliding with the barriers' of the A666.

But when pulled over and quizzed by officers, the driver said he was 'just taking his friends home'.

Police joked that the driver 'maybe should have paid for a taxi' for his friends.

In a tweet, police said: "The driver of a Vauxhall viva was stopped on Raikes Lane Bolton by #XT18 after being seen driving with no lights and nearly colliding with barriers on A666.

"He said he was just taking his friends home... maybe he should've paid for a taxi for them! Arrested drink drive."
