Driver who knocked down boy on bike in Walkergate but wouldn't call ambulance asked to come forward

A driver who hit a schoolboy on his bike and left him needing stitches is being asked to contact police.

The crash happened at about 9.15pm on Thursday when the 12-year-old boy was cycling in the Walkergate area of Newcastle.

He was hit by a vehicle at the junction of Westbourne Avenue and Welbeck Road and was knocked to the ground.

However, rather than call an ambulance, the driver offered to take the child home to his parents.

He agreed but after dropping the child off, the woman failed to provide any of her details and asked the family not to contact an ambulance.

She then left and the schoolboy’s mother decided to take him to hospital as a precaution where he received a number of stitches to a cut on his leg.

Police inquiries into the circumstances around the collision are ongoing but officers are now asking for the driver, or anyone who knows her, to come forward.

She was driving a dark hatchback style vehicle and is described as white, aged in her early 30s, tanned, of slim build and with dark brown, shoulder length hair. She was wearing an Adidas army green/khaki tracksuit.

Investigating officer PC Amy Cole said: “We are carrying out an investigation into the circumstances and are trying to speak to all parties involved.

“We are not looking to apportion any blame but obviously it is concerning that the driver was asking witnesses at the scene, and the boy’s family, not to contact an ambulance.

“There could be a reasonable explanation for this but it is important we identify the driver so we can establish exactly what has happened.

“There were a number of witnesses to the collision who we would also like to speak to and so if anyone saw this incident then we would ask them to contact police.

“Thankfully the young boy who was involved in the incident is recovering well at home and has not suffered any serious injuries.”

Anyone who may be able to assist police is asked to call 101 or contact officers on the Northumbria Police website quoting log 1084 03/09/20.

You can also email PC Cole on 8903@northumbria.pnn.police.uk or contact independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously quoting 0800 555 111.
