Driver who had been disqualified three times leads police on chase through Wigan

A driver that had been disqualified three times led police on a long chase through Wigan in the early hours.

Police officers, dogs and a helicopter were scrambled to pursue a car through Leigh, Hindley and Atherton.

The chase culminated at 5am on Saturday morning in Beacon Road in Bickershaw and the driver was arrested.

Officers discovered that the person behind the wheel had been disqualified from driving three times and the car was running on cloned registration plates.

The driver has been remanded until they appear in court, police officers say.

Greater Manchester Police's Traffic division tweeted: "Driver has just been arrested by RPU west following a lengthy pursuit around Leigh, Hindley and Atherton.

"The driver was found to be disq x3 and the vehicle was also a clone.

"They've been remanded for court so hopefully (fingers crossed) they'll be getting a stay at HMP and it'll be one more dangerous driver off the road for a while."

One resident described the moment they saw the chase, tweeting: "I saw this unfolding when I heard @NPASNorthWest flying overhead.

"They then came down our street at an absolute rate of knots, tyres squealing, engines roaring, narrowly missing all the cars parked up."

The police officer added: "The fact that they were still driving after being told three times by three court appearances not to drive should be enough to get some HMP time."
