Driver who crashed into garden wall was pronounced dead at the scene

A pensioner whose car crashed into a wall in Bristol this morning (February 19) was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident.

Police and ambulance crews were called to Hendre Road, in Ashton Gate, at around 10.30am following reports a car had mounted the pavement and crashed into a front garden wall at around 10.30am.

Paramedics and police rushed to the scene, but the man had sadly died. As a sudden death, the case will be passed to the Avon Coroner, but it is understood he had suffered a medical episode while driving.

The street, which is just off Winterstoke Road near Gore’s Marsh Park and Ashton Gate stadium, was cordoned off for around two hours following the incident.

Police reassured the public the presence of armed police at the scene was purely coincidental, as they happened to be nearby at the time.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Constabulary said: “We were called to a single vehicle collision at around 10.30am in Hendre Road involving a car which had been in collision with a wall.

“This was a medical incident, and a man in his 80s was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with this family at this time. Avon Coroner has been informed, and a file will be passed to them,” he added.
