Driver who crashed in 100mph police chase was still almost twice the alcohol limit two hours later

A motorist smashed into a lamppost after losing control of his car during a 100mph police chase on a valley road.

Tests showed that two hours after the crash Jonathan Partridge was still almost twice the legal drink-drive limit.

The 45-year-old has been jailed for what is his fifth conviction for being behind the wheel while under the influence.

Swansea Crown Court heard the chase and crash happened in the early hours of the morning of March 9 this year in the Swansea Valley.

Ieaun Rees, prosecuting, said an officer on roads patrol near Godre'r Graig was notified of a possible drink-driver in the area.

Just after 1.15am the officer spotted a vehicle matching the description heading down the main A4067 Swansea Valley road and began to follow it.

The court heard the driver of the car, Partridge, put his foot down and raced away from the officer at 90mph. The officer illuminated his blue lights and a chase ensued.

Mr Rees said the fleeing Partridge topped speeds of 100mph as he continued down the main road but at the Glanrhyd Industrial Estate roundabout near Pontardawe he lost control of his car, crashing into a metal pole then spinning across the carriageway and ploughing into a lamppost.

When Partridge emerged from the car he said to officers: "I've done it before. Can I have a fag?"

The defendant was arrested and taken to a police station and a subsequent test showed he had 66mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35mg.

Partridge, of Brombil Street, Margam, Port Talbot, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and driving with excess alcohol. The court heard he has four previous convictions for driving with excess alcohol or being in charge of a vehicle while over the limit.

Dan Griffiths, for Partridge, said on the night in question the defendant had been in an emotional state following a family row and had consumed too much alcohol.

Judge Paul Thomas QC said even two hours after the crash the defendant was still almost twice the legal limit and had put other road users at great risk.

He told Partridge that he had an "appalling record" for drink-driving offences and showed a "flagrant disregard" for the rules of the road.

Partridge was jailed for six months and banned from driving for four years.
