Five separate drivers were caught using their mobile phone behind the wheel by Avon and Somerset Police today (February 27).

The drivers were all reprimanded by officers amid what was described as a "busy old day" for traffic officers in the city.

One of the cars – a silver Seat – had a false licence plate in order to try and avoid police detection.

Other offenders on the roads including multiple vehicles being seized for not having any valid insurance.

Three separate cars were identified by police on social media as having been seized.

Other photos posted to Twitter from police accounts show dark-coloured Volvo and Volkswagen cars also having been pulled over by patrol cars.

The social media post from the Roads Policing Unit from Avon and Somerset Police said it had also dealt with "a number of other driving offences" in a busy day for the officers.

The tweet said: "Busy old day in Bristol.

"All of these vehicles were seized for having no insurance - with the Seat being on false plates to avoid detection.

"We also dealt with 5 drivers using a mobile phone, and a number of other driving offences throughout the day shift today."

This busy day for traffic officers comes after the force confirmed it had received nearly 1,000 reports of Covid restrictions being broken in the week between February 18 and 24.

Avon and Somerset Police says it received 988 reported breaches of the restrictions into its control room between February 18 and 24.

Officers attended approximately 60 per cent of the 176 reported breaches through the control room handing out 126 fixed penalty notices.
