Driver 'trashes' car on M5 in wet weather

A driver "trashed" their car on the M5 motorway after going too fast in wet weather, police have said.

The vehicle hit the central reservation on Sunday, July 4, after travelling so fast, despite the rain, that road policing officers could not keep up.

The motorist then lost control, hit the barrier and crashed. They have been reported for driving without due care and attention.

The force Twitter account warned drivers to "drive to the conditions" and, with more downpours forecast, they have reiterated that advice.

Avon and Somerset Police told the public in a tweet: "Heavy rain is causing numerous issues on the M5 - please drive appropriately for the weather.

"Working with @HighwaysEngland we are dealing with multiple incidents #TST3"

They added underneath: "One driver clearly exceeding speed limit by some margin. Unfortunately #OT35 wasn't able to catch up before they lost control and collided with central reservation.

"Reported #DWDCA [driving without due car and attention', car trashed... Drive to the conditions!"
