Driver told police 'I don't have a licence' after taking girlfriend's car

A driver was caught behind the wheel in Bootle after taking his girlfriend's car while she slept.

Anthony Williams, of St David's Road, Huyton, told police: "I'll be honest with you, mate, I haven't got a licence" when he was pulled over on September 4 in Bootle.

The 37-year-old, who had been disqualified from driving for 18 months for a previous offence in April, pleaded guilty to driving without a licence and taking a vehicle without consent at Liverpool Magistrates Court yesterday (October 11).

Mr Whitehead, defending, said Williams had shown 'disarming candour' in a police interview, in which he admitted what he had done and said he did not think that taking his girlfriend's car without permission was an offence.

He said she would not have allowed him to use her car as she was "not as stupid as him".

District judge Clarke said Williams' actions had been "foolish and reckless". He sentenced him to a 12 month community order, 15 rehabilitation days, and ordered him to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work.

He also added four weeks to his existing driving ban, meaning he will not be allowed back on the roads until November 19 2023.

He said: "Your manner of driving didn't cause a concern and if it had, the sentence would be more significant."
