DRIVER testing will resume on a “gradual basis” over the coming three weeks, it has been confirmed.
Services were suspended on March 13 due to Covid-19 restrictions with drivers whose learner permit expired since then granted a four-month extension.
But Transport Minister Shane Ross said yesterday plans are in train to resume testing with measures put in place to protect staff and candidates.
He added: “Following the publication of a revised Phase 3 road map for reopening Ireland, it is now possible to restart the testing of car drivers earlier than anticipated.
“While a specific date has not yet been finalised for the restart of car tests, this is a high priority.”
Mr Ross said he couldn’t give a specific date but assured that his department and the Road Safety Authority were “working towards getting car tests up and running, as soon as possible, in Phase 3”.
He explained reopening would be “gradual” with strict protocols to protect driver and tester – who would have to sit in close proximity to each other.
In the meantime, the period of validity of learner permits will be further extended to November 5.
