Driver taken to hospital with 'critical injuries' after car crashed into river off A52

A driver has been taken to hospital with 'critical injuries' after a car crashed into the river off the A52 this morning.

According to witnesses, another car was also seen flipped over and on its roof.

The road was shut in both directions at around 4.40am this morning (June 18).

The accident happened between the junctions for Yeldersley Lane near Ednaston and Hall Lane heading towards Ashbourne, DerbyshireLive reports.

The car that went in the river is very badly damaged and has now been removed from the water.

Police at the scene confirmed that a driver has been taken to hospital with 'critical injuries'.

Officers are also looking closely at the vehicle's tyres.

Drivers have described "traffic mayhem" as delays build in and around Ashbourne because of the road closure.

There are also reports that a bridge off the A52 has been damaged as a result of the accident.

A resident who lives near the scene and did not want to be named, said: “I woke up because I heard doors slamming and then saw the blue lights. There were lots of emergency vehicles.

"There was police, ambulance and helicopters. It was all happening. I thought it was a multi-vehicle accident.

"It’s a busy road. I think there’s been a bit of a fire as I saw black on the road earlier but I can’t be sure.

"I hope whoever is involved is ok. It looks very serious.”
