Driver taken to hospital and dog dies after crash where car leaves the road and crashes into several trees in Salford

A driver was taken to hospital and a dog died following a crash in Salford it has been confirmed.

A blue coloured Renault left the A57 Liverpool Road in Irlam and collided with several trees, police said.

Police, paramedics and fire crews all attended the scene close to the AJ Bell Stadium and Barton Airport around 6:30pm on Thursday evening.

Officers from Greater Manchester Police's (GMP) traffic unit posted a picture of the badly damaged car nestled in bushes at the side of the road following the smash, which involved just the one vehicle.

The driver was taken to hospital but their injuries are not believed to be serious they said.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester and Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said a dog had died at the scene following the incident.

However a GMP spokeswoman was unable to confirm if the dog was travelling in the car.

Road closures remained in place for around an hour and a half following the incident.

"The Renault left the carriageway and struck several trees before coming to rest in the hedges" GMP Traffic said in a post just before 8pm.

"The driver has been taken to hospital but the injuries are not believed to be serious at this time" they added.

"Enquiries are ongoing. All closures have been lifted."

GMFRS said they received a 999 call about the incident at 6:28pm.

"It involved one vehicle that left the carriageway" a spokesman said.

"Fire crews found that the vehicle had stopped in woodland beside the carriageway and the driver was able to get out of the vehicle.

"A dog has sadly died at the scene.

"GMP and NWAS were both in attendance."
