Driver taken to hospital after car goes off road onto embankment off the A19 near Sunderland

A driver was taken to hospital after their vehicle went off the road and onto an embankment while on the A19 near Sunderland.

Emergency crews attended the scene shortly before 12:40am today (November 4) on the A19 northbound, at the A690 junction following reports of a one-vehicle collision.

A vehicle was found to have gone off road and into an embankment. The driver of the vehicle was subsequently taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The road was closed from 10am today while recovery work continued with police revisiting the scene.

As a result, there was some disruption in the vicinity with tail backs forming between A1018 (Seaham Grange roundabout, Seaton) and A690 Durham Road (Herrington Interchange, Sunderland).

According to Traffic England, the A19 northbound re-opened at approximately 10.50am today (November 4).

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly before 12:40am today (Friday) police received a report of a one-vehicle collision on the A19 northbound, at the A690 junction.

“It was reported a vehicle had gone off road and into a ditch.

“Officers and emergency services attended the scene and the driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

“Police revisited the scene at around 10am to help assist with the recovery of the vehicle.”

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson added: "We were called at 00:44am this morning to a road traffic accident on the A19 before the junction to the A690.

"We sent two emergency ambulances and one rapid response paramedic. One patient was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital."
